France repelled the Prussian invasion here in 1870, hence its name, La Défense. I worked there for a few years, and enjoyed the architecture. But it was good to get home to my island at night, and watch the Seine flowing by as it has for thousands of years.
The view from the Grande Arche de la Défense, looking down the historic axis of Paris, to the Arc de Tromphe, the Place de la Concorde and the Louvre. I liked living there. Eventually.
